San Francisco Ballet and Smuin Ballet Participate in 2022 World Ballet Day

October 31, 2022—San Francisco Ballet and Smuin Contemporary Ballet are among the over 60 international participants in the 2022 World Ballet Day, held this year on Wednesday, November 2nd. Now in its ninth year, this is the first year the event has not been held in October. World Ballet Day takes viewers behind-the-scenes of major ballet companies in livestreamed videos in six continents. In addition to the two Bay Area companies, this year's participants include the Royal Ballet, the Australian Ballet, and more than 60 other companies.

San Francisco Ballet last participated in World Ballet Day in 2017 and attracted nearly 100,000 views worldwide. The Company was invited by the Royal Ballet to participate in this year's World Ballet Day. SF Ballet is releasing 80 minutes of never-before-seen footage of the 2023 Season rehearsals, as well as dancer interviews with choreographers such as Danielle Rowe and Robert Garland, director of Dance Theater of Harlem. The videos are being livestreamed on YouTube, Facebook, and at SFBallet.org. In addition to interviews, the presentation features choreographers and dancers in rehearsals, such as Christopher Wheeldon and previous Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson, and SF Ballet Principal Dancers Luke Ingham, Sasha De Sola, Misa Kuranaga, Angelo Greco, and others. SF Ballet's World Ballet Day livestream includes an introduction from incoming SF Ballet Artistic Director Tamara Rojo and Executive Director Danielle St.Germain, Christopher Wheeldon's Cinderella and Helgi Tomasson's Giselle in rehearsal with the choreographers, interviews with next@90 festival choreographers Danielle Rowe and Robert Garland, and costume designer Emma Kingsbury, footage from next@90 festival ballets, and Dana Genshaft's Future Paper dance film featuring SF Ballet School Trainees and an introduction by SF Ballet School Director Patrick Armand.

Smuin Contemporary Ballet is offering livestreams of dance classes, rehearsals, backstage tours, and more starting at 10:00 am for Company class and at 11:00 am PT for rehearsal. Smuin is livestreaming on their YouTube channel via a link to be made available on Wednesday morning.
